Sodium Bromide General & Uses

Sodium bromide is a salt with the formula NaBr, widely used as an anticonvulsant and a sedative in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its action is due to the bromide ion (potassium bromide is equally effective). It is a high-melting white, crystalline solid that resembles sodium chloride. It is a widely used source of the bromide ion.

Principal chemical reactions:
NaBr is widely used in organic synthesis as a nucleophile to convert organochlorine compounds to organobromine derivatives, which are more usefully (selectively) reactive.

Sodium bromide can be used as a source of the chemical element bromine. This can be accomplished by bubbling chlorine gas through an aqueous solution of NaBr.

As a source of HBr, NaBr is treated with a strong, non-volatile acid:

It is used as a hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and sedative in medicine. As a source of the bromide ion, which is pharmacologically active, it is equivalent to potassium bromide. It is used to establish a bromide ion reserve in a bromine spa (hot tub) antimicrobial treatment regimen.

Sodium Bromide BP Ph Eur Grade Specifications
102.9 --- CAS 7647-15-6

DEFINITION
Content: 98.5 per cent to 101.0 per cent (dried substance).

CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white, granular powder or small, colourless, transparent or opaque crystals, slightly hygroscopic.
Solubility: Freely soluble in water, soluble in ethanol (96 per cent).

IDENTIFICATION
A. It gives reaction (a) of bromides.
B. Solution S (see Tests) gives the reactions of sodium.

TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 10.0 g in carbon dioxide-free water and dilute to 100 mL with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution: Solution S is clear and colourless.
Acidity or alkalinity: To 10 mL of solution S add 0.1 mL of bromothymol blue solution. Not more than 0.5 mL of0.01 M hydrochloric acid or 0.01 M sodium hydroxide is required to change the colour of the indicator.
Bromates: To 10 mL of solution S add 1 mL of starch solution, 0.1 mL of a 100 g/L solution of potassium iodide and 0.25 mL of 0.5 M sulfuric acid and allow to stand protected from light for 5 min. No blue or violet colour develops.
Chlorides and sulfates: Limits: chlorides: maximum 0.6 per cent; sulfates: maximum 0.01 per cent.
Iodides: To 5 mL of solution S add 0.15 mL of ferric chloride solution and 2 mL of methylene chloride. Shake and allow to separate. The lower layer is colourless.
Iron: Maximum 20 ppm.
Magnesium and alkaline-earth metals: Maximum 200 ppm, calculated as Ca.
Loss on drying: Maximum 3.0 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in an oven at 105C for 3 h.

ASSAY
Dissolve 85.0 mg in water, add 5 mL of dilute nitric acid and dilute to 50 mL with water. Titrate with0.1 M silver nitrate, determining the end-point potentiometrically.
1 mL of 0.1 M silver nitrate is equivalent to 10.29 mg of NaBr.
Calculate the percentage content of NaBr using the following expression: (a-2.902b)
a= percentage content of NaBr and NaCl obtained in the assay and calculated as NaBr;
b=percentage content of Cl obtained in the test for chlorides.

STORAGE
In an airtight container.

Sodium Bromide USP Grade Specifications
NaBr --- 102.89 --- CAS 7647-15-6

Sodium Bromide contains not less than 98.0 percent and not more than 100.5 percent of NaBr, calculated on the dried basis. It contains no added substances.

Packaging and storage: Preserve in well-closed containers, and store at room temperature.
Appearance of solution: clear and colorless.
Test solution: Dissolve 10.0 g in carbon dioxide-free water, and dilute with the same solvent to 100 mL.
Identification:
A: A solution containing 4.0 mg of sodium bromide responds to the test for Bromide.
B: It responds to the test for Sodium.
Acidity or alkalinity: To 10 mL of the solution prepared for the test for Appearance of solution, add 0.1 mL of bromothymol blue: not more than 0.5 mL of 0.01 N hydrochloric acid or 0.01 N sodium hydroxide is required to change the color of this solution.
Loss on drying: Dry it at 100 to 105 for 3 hours: it loses not more than 3.0% of its weight.
Bromates:
Starch mercuric iodide solution: Triturate 1.0 g of soluble starch with 5 mL of water, and pour the mixture into 100 mL of boiling water containing 10 mg of mercuric iodide.
Procedure: To 10 mL of the solution prepared for the test for Appearance of solution add 1 mL of Starch-mercuric iodide solution, 0.1 mL of a 100 g per L solution of potassium iodide, and 0.25 mL of 0.5 M sulfuric acid. Allow to stand protected from light for 5 minutes. No blue or violet color develops.
Limit of chlorine: not more than 0.6%.
Iodides: To 5 mL of the solution prepared for the test for Appearance of solution add 0.15 mL of a 10.5 g per 100 mL ferric chloride solution, and 2 mL of dichloromethane. Shake, and allow to separate. The lower layer is colorless.
Sulfates: A 2.0-g portion shows no more sulfate than corresponds to 0.2 mL of 0.020 N sulfuric acid (0.01%).
Limit of iron: not more than 20 ppm.
Magnesium and alkaline-earth metals: To pass the test. (0.02%, calculated as Ca).
Heavy metals: not more than 10 ppm.

Barter

They who love thee on this earth, keep calling on thee and chanting thy beads
Lest thou forgetest.

They assign the credit of their hard work to your blessings
They keep you amused.

They come to thy temple with baskets of fruits, as if you were a glutton
They deny the same to their children.

They offer you milk for a bath and burn the ghee
They hardly understand the meaning of it.

They bring gold and diamonds. They come with beating of drums
They love to advertise their offerings.

They offer you a small bribe as advance for booty, called lottery
They love to dream.

I do not bow down at your door
I do not bargain for booty
Your promise of the heaven does not lure me
Your hell-fire does not scare me
I do not even know the proper method of prayer
I do not offer any thing to you
Ages have gone by and I have not seen you my lord
Yet my love for you keeps waiting for you.
